Aquaman, Ant-Man, Batman… The list of superhero movies that have dominated the big screen in recent years, thanks to Marvel, DC, and others, seems endless – just like the profits production companies have been able to rake in.
One thing is clear: Germany finally needs its own superhero!
Kinnhakenhank is here to save German cinema from the domination of films by Schweiger and Schweighöfer! However, it’s probably clear from the name that he is not your typical blockbuster superhero. In fact, it’s not Kinnhakenhank, but 11-year-old Piet, who is the real hero of this story. A completely ordinary boy – without magical powers, without excessive muscle mass, and without divine heritage.
And therein lies the charm of the film: It doesn’t tell the story of a superhero learning how to fight, but of an average boy who grows beyond himself through good deeds.
At first, Piet looks up to Kinnhakenhank as his big idol. But over the course of the film, he realizes that his own mother, Marta, is the true role model. Through her empathetic, thoughtful, and brave actions, she inspires Piet to become a better person – one who considers others and thinks with his head rather than his fists.
The short film intentionally contrasts with traditional superhero blockbusters, where women often need to be saved by their heroes. While Kinnhakenhank may not be the next big Spider-Man or Captain America of the superhero world, it is definitely a story with heart – especially because of the protagonist with whom everyone can identify.
